Full Description & Details
Very clear night on Christmas day. I was driving home with my girlfriend after spending time with family. She was driving and I was the passenger. Neither of us had been drinking. At one point the treeline opened up on our left to a farmer's field. Something there caught my eye and when I glanced over I saw a large pulsating red and green light hovering about 500 feet (aprox) over the field. I said "Hmm, that's strange. The hell is that?" Girlfriend looked over and wasn't sure. "A plane maybe?"
I told her to pull the car over which she did. Both of us got out and stared at this thing for a good 5 mins (which felt long cause it was cold as hell--I'm in Quebec remember).
The object didn't move and didn't seem to have a discernible shape. The closest thing I can compare it too was the light from a welder's arc. The light itself didn't blink like a plane or helicopter's would and it didn't make a noise, it just hung in the air, undulating. I held my fingers out and found it was about the size of my pinky nail. It isn't unheard of for helicopters and sometimes military jets to fly overhead, but each of those makes an incredible racket (as anyone can tell you who's seen military type craft fly nearby--they're loud as hell, you can't miss them). This thing was dead silent. My girlfriend's a big skeptic (I'm a little more open minded which is why I wanted her to get a good look, so she couldn't say, oh, it's was just a helicopter etc). We stared at it for a few minutes and she was at a loss to make sense of what she was seeing.
There weren't any roads that would allow us to get closer, so I chalked it up to an 'unexplained' phenomena and we went home. Now our bedroom window looks out onto the lake and points roughly in the same direction as where the object was hovering. After I switched out the light and was heading to bed (maybe 10 mins after first viewing the object), something caught my attention outside the window. As before I glanced over and saw the object, only this time it was much bigger. Instead of being the size of my pinky, it was the size of my thumbnail and we were farther from it, so whatever this was it was getting closer. Same green and red strobing light (not blinking like the hundreds of planes and helicopters I've seen in my life). Stayed there for a good 5 minutes just hovering and I reached in my pocket for my phone to catch what I knew would be a crappy picture that would never do this thing justice and when I looked up it was gone. My girlfriend spent the next hour looking up UFO sightings in the area because she didn't have the faintest idea what the heck it was. She always has an explanation for everything. That's how I knew this was something special. I've told one other person who said it was probably Santa Claus which I thought was funny.
Finally, I added a link below to a youtube video I came across which is the closest approximation I have to explaining the shape and undulating light pattern we saw that night. The colors in the video are different and the video itself may be a hoak (I have no clue), however, this is very much like what we saw.
Can sighting be explained as any conventional man-made or natural object?
Not sure. It was just too strange and I spend a lot of time watching the sky (I love stars). Nothing I've ever seen before.
I'm a high school teacher.
Views on UFOs, before and after sighting
I know a lot about them and believe they're real which was why I had my girlfriend stop the car and have a look since she's not into this stuff and would love for it to be something conventional. She was also baffled.
