Was extremely far away in the night sky. Bright in color, white, round with a tapered end to it.

its an urban area, a large Crystal Rock water facility on my right with condos next to it, and a large housing developement on my left hand side.
Full Description & Details
I was coming home from work at about 9:45pm one night in October of 2005. It was a semi clear night, and the direction that I was going brough me on a kind of ridge that allows you the driver to see the entire Watertown/Middlebury valley. I was passing a water tower on my right hand side, when I looked to my left and saw a very large bright light in the distant sky. I though at first that maybe it was a bright star or maybe a meteor. Then, by the only way I can describe its movement, it seemed to just take off at an incredible speed, almost like the way the ships from Star Wars or Star Trek did when they jumped to hyperspace. There was no sound, no sonic boom indicating that it was a jet or some other man made craft, it was completely silent. I slammed on my brakes in disbelief. This whole incident lasted maybe 5 seconds, but it was enough time for me to see what happened clearly. I was not tired, nor dreary eyed, I know what I saw, and I tell you now, it was no meteor, plane, or helicopter. Please help me out on this one.

be explained as any conventional man-made or natural
object?
I dont know what else it could be, I thought it may have been a meteor at first, but it wasn't moving at first. Then when it took off at an incredible speed, it couldnt have been a star or meteor. Nothing man made could have moved that quickly. Nothing.
Personal Background
I worked at that time at a part time job at a local mall. I am currently in school for becoming an automotive technician.
Views on UFOs, before and after sighting
I'm quite skeptical on UFO sightings and findings. My thing is I'll beleive it when i see it. I don't deny there are strange things in our universe, but i'm not sure how I feel. After this whole experience, I'm actually quite shaken up about it.
