Appearance / Description of Object(s)

To me it appeared either as a log or cigar shape with no other visible features. I could not see windows and it had lights (solidly lit) on the front and along what I considered the top of the object.

It appeared about 12 inches across...and 4 inches high.

Description of Area / Surroundings

The side of the road the object was beaming its light was farmland. On the other side of the road were several small homes.

Full Description & Details

I left work around midnight during late August, 1977. I was driving on route 27 from New Brunswick to Hillsborough where I lived at the time. Route 27 becomes Amwell Road between Millstone River Road and Route 206, a strip of about 3 miles. Portions of the road are elivated. As I received the crest about 3 miles away a saw a steady beam of light I mistakenly thought was a helicopter searching for something and I expected to see police vehicles in the area as I approached. As I got within a mile of the craft (it looked like a log or cigar shaped with solid white lights at the front and along the sides) I realized that there were no police, no emergency vehicles and the craft was basically by itself. As I got within 100 yards or so of the craft or about a quarter mile from route 206, I realized the object was not making any noise at all. And, as I continued to approach the beam went off and the object made a right angle turn at an incredible rate of speed, again with no noise whatsoever. I hit the brakes and made a u-turn and drove to an upgrade portion of the road to where I could see the area the beam was on between the house and barn. I saw nothing unusual. It was about 1 a.m. now. I also looked to see if I could see the object in the sky anywhere, I saw nothing at that point. I went home and told my wife what I had seen and she suggested I call the police. I thought about it and could just picture them laughing. So I didn't. 20 years later, 1997, I was sitting in my living room with my wife and another couple. Our sons played football for the town Glen Rock, NJ and we got together after a game. We started talking about odd things that happened in our lives and I related my ufo story the wife of the other couple says to her husband tell him. He said he recalled in the summer of 1977

he was outside his home in Manville, NJ (side by side with Hillsborough) and he saw an object that looked like a cigar with lights go overhead towards the next town Hillsborough which made no sound of any kind.

Can sighting be explained as any conventional man-made or natural object?

As I stated above I've been in the military...a Vietnam era veteran. I have worked for 40 years in broadcast news, retiring recently having spent the past 34 years with the CBS affiliate in New York City. I attended Central Commercial High School also in NYC.

Views on UFOs, before and after sighting

Before the siding if someone had told me the story I'd be the one chuckling. I read very little before this incident and every book I could find on the subject since.

Other Comments

I was in the Army 66-68. And had been working as a news reporter so I've been trained to look for details. I looked at something I could not identify, solid, lit up and right in front of my face.
