Appearance / Description of Object(s)

Very white light, and extremely bright, arranged into three panels. I recall thinking that the borders of the panels were like the borders of interlocking hexagons but the sum seemed to be a flat disc shape. At an estimated 1km range the light was approximately equivalent to the size of the full moon, only it appeared ovoid as though it were a disc viewed from an angle.

With an outstretched arm, I would say that 2 fingers would not quite cover its width but its height could be covered with a thumb.

Upon arriving at the beach we noticed a very strange cloud formation: a massive, nearly spherical cloud sitting on the horizon. By my estimates, the cloud was centred over Rose Bay just over a kilometer away and just behind a ridge of trees. The top of the cloud was situated at about 45 degrees from horizontal, and the bottom of the cloud at about 20 degrees from horizontal. Adding to the strangeness of the phenomenon were six "contrails" emerging from the base of the cloud. These were stationary, three on each side and stretching all the way to the horizon opposite to the spherical cloud.

Upon arriving at the scene, my friend and I were amazed at this cloud scene and talked about it for a few minutes. Nothing much was happening. The weather was fair, relatively warm, little wind. The skies were clear otherwise. We actually sat down and had a cigarette and talked about UFOs for a while before the conversation turned elsewhere.

We had been there for about 10 minutes and I was talking to my friend, facing the cloud formation. I noticed a light in the base of the cloud, and it was getting brighter! I said something to get my friend's attention and we both watched as the light got brighter and brighter until it was extremely intense. The relative size of the light was much like the full moon, only it was either ovoid or a disc appearing at an angle to us. I seem to recall that it was actually three distinct 'panels' of light.

The light faded quickly, and the total duration of the phenomenon was perhaps 7 or 8 seconds. We quickly vacated the scene thereafter. The formation of the central cloud and 'contrails' remained unchanged throughout this event.

Can sighting be explained as any conventional man-made or natural object?

I only think that it could have been ball lightning or some other extraordinarily rare phenomenon, but the weather was very pleasant

Views on UFOs, before and after sighting

I had once before seen a horizontal line of 4 white lights flying silently overhead but it could have been one or more aircraft. At another time my father and I saw what we thought to be a low-flying helicopter in the late dusk, but it made no sound.
