Appearance / Description of Object(s)
It was bright white when it was close. When we first saw it, it looked like the setting sun, very orangey red but as it got closer the color changed to a very white light. It looked from our vantage point as if it was completely round.
Size of Object(s)
It was very big, around 30 or 40 feet across.
Description of Area / Surroundings
It was very rural in that part of Indiana in 1969. It was a long stretch of road with no other traffic. Just miles of road with vegetation on either side. The nearest military base would have been in Chicago which was about about a two hour drive from where we were. Lake Michigan would have been a few miles to the north of Central Avenue.
Full Description & Details
My husband and I moved into a large apartment. We were 20 years old. We had a baby, September 1969. We were really happy. My husband got a job where he worked late hours. I wasn’t used to being left alone and with a new baby I was uneasy. I thought it would be a good idea to stay at my parent’s home and my husband could pick me up on the way home from work. All went as planned for a couple of months. My husband would usually pick me up about 11pm. One night in November of 1969, he didn’t pick me up until 2 am. I was so angry that I wouldn’t talk to him. We drove away in silence for our 20 minute ride home. While on the road my husband asks me to look at something in the sky that he was looking at on the driver’s side (North side of the road). I wouldn’t look because I had my face turned away from him. I was still angry. He started to get really excited and finally yelled at me to look. I looked and saw a big round ball of orangey-red light. It was really big. I told him it was the setting sun. He told me to think about what time it was. No setting sun at almost 3 in the morning! I watched it and it was moving along with the car. The ball of light stopped in the sky right above us. So we backed up until we were even with it and he pulled over on the side of the road. At the same time, I noticed that a man in a pickup truck had also stopped right behind us. I started getting a little nervous about the guy in the pickup truck. There were no other cars on the road. I took my eyes off of the light in the sky and watched the guy. He got out of his truck and started running back and forth. He seemed very agitated but then something else got my attention. The light in the sky was now moving over us to my side of the car. It did a sort of arch over the car. Than it started moving straight up, made a turn and started going over a neighborhood away from the main street we were on (Central Avenue). My husband said “hold on, I’m going to follow it”! We started driving down through the neighborhood for a few minutes until it stopped again. This time it shot straight up and in a very fast rate of speed disappearing from view. We just sat there for a minute. I told my husband that I was going to call someone and report it. He told me not to because they were going to say we were nuts. So we went home and listened to radio to find out if anyone else had reported seeing it. We didn’t hear anything about it. The strangest thing about that night was that it took us 3 hours to get home. We lived 20 minutes from my parents. We followed the light for about 15 minutes to half an hour. I don’t know why we walked into our apartment as the sun was coming up around 6:30 in the morning! The baby in my lap never made a sound.
Can sighting be explained as any conventional man-made or natural object?
I have never seen anything move like that so I don't think it was a natural object.
We were a very young married couple with a baby. We both lived in a rural setting up to that time. Didn't watch much tv or anything. We were very unsophisticated and down to earth. Neither of us were religious so we didn't jump to the conclusion that this was a sign from any god or anything.
Views on UFOs, before and after sighting
I never read anything before my sighting. I never gave it much thought. Not even right after. I don't remember getting interested in UFO's until I heard about the Travis Walton case in 1975.
I remember thinking that the object was scanning us. It moved from South to North and back again over our car in an arch. I remember that we just sat there still and didn't talk. I think that was strange now that I look back on it. That fact that my husband and I never talked about it again or even thought about it also seems strange to me.
