UFO Sighting Report

sometime between 1978 and 1984

Scottsdale, Arizona, United States

A V shaped formation of white-orange lights was seen near Phoenix Sky Harbor International airport. Appearance was similar to that of another incident which occurred years later (1997) known as the "Phoenix Lights".

Appearance / Description of Object(s)

bright white-orange spheres

Size of Object(s)

It was probably about 9" at arms length, maybe bigger.

Distance to Object(s) & Altitude

I presummed it was at about 10,000 ft AGL, and maybe 5 miles horizontally.

Full Description & Details

I witnessed this incident sometime between 1978 and 1984 from Scottsdale, Arizona. My mom and dad called me out to the backyard to see something in the sky sometime just after sundown. It was a formation of five (?) lights, whitish-orange, in a V formation, high in the sky, turning westward. They were absolutely silent, and with no navigation lights, and nothing blinking. What was I seeing? A formation of jets? Landing lights? Jet exhaust flames? I thought this was odd, because they were only a couple of miles from Phoenix Sky Harbor, a very busy international airport. But there is also a national guard base there, and another one nearby. I regarded the incident as unusual, but not necessarily abnormal. I just did not know what it was.

I was a student pilot at the time, and had never seen anything like this. The formation must have been at least a mile across. I could estimate the size because when I fly, I can look down and see the city road grid marked off in squares one mile on a side. One mile from 5000 AGL does not look like much. The view can simply be reversed (along with some built-in assumptions) to estimate distances ground-to-air.

I called ATC and the tower at Sky Harbor. Neither knew anything about the incident. I called the Phoenix Gazette hotline and left a message about it. They sent me a news clipping about how low flying B-52 bombers would, during radar evasion exercises, occasionally scare the daylights out of motorists driving in northern Arizona. The writer suggested that maybe I saw something like that. But this was not anything like that at all.

Can sighting be explained as any conventional man-made or natural object?

definitely not

Witness Background

Some personal background: My formal education was in Chemical Engineering, but professionally, I was a Systems Engineer, and helped design automation control systems, mostly for the semiconductor industry. My hobbies were chemistry and amateur radio. After watching numerous StarTrek episodes, I became interested in antigravity and space travel. Eventually, I figured out that antigravity was technically feasible, and that it ought to be easy to do, once we figured it out. I discovered that we needed a new metric for “distance”, and that the currently used “spacetime” was not a metric used by nature. I also ended up investigating what I call “the physics of non-locality”. The implications of the latter were wondrous and fascinating, but also terrifying. If I could figure this out, surely a LOT of other people could too. It implied that things looking like UFOs ought to be popping out of the woodwork all over the world. I did an Internet search, and sure enough, “valid” UFO sightings were frequent and plentiful. I thought these were created by hobbyists, but after I read several good books on UFOs, I decided they were much too sophisticated to be in that category. They must be from well-funded “black projects”. Still, we should be seeing some of the simpler hobbyist versions too. Views on UFOs, before and after sighting

I knew nothing about UFOs at the time, nor was I interested in them. At the time of the sighting, I did NOT think I was seeing a "UFO". It was simply something I did not understand.
