Appearance / Description of Object(s)
The craft looked like a dark grey equilateral triangle. It had no lights and I didn't observe any markings.
Size of Object(s)
The craft appeared to be the size of large fighter airplane or a small turbo-prop airplane, about 20 to 30m in length. About three fingers wide (outstretched arm) to cover it.
Full Description & Details
It has taken my quite a few years to report this sighting. Even though it happened well over a decade ago I remember the sighting well. I was in my backyard setting up my telescope for a few hours of star gazing. It was a clear cold night without a moon.
My telescope had a computerized equatorial mount, which meant that it was capable of following the rotation of the sky. This always took a bit of time to setup and involved aligning the telescope to several of the brightest stars visible at any given time.
While I was aligning my telescope to a second star I took a brief moment to look up to find the star I needed. While doing so a dark triangular craft flew overhead. I could only see the craft for several seconds after which it disappeared from sight behind my house.
The craft was an equilateral triangle. It was a very dark grey color and clearly stood out against the deep blue of the night sky. There were no lights on the craft and I could not see any markings. The craft was flying to the north in a straight line at constant altitude and speed.
As you would expect from a “triangle” it was flying with one of the apices forward. The only sound I could hear was a moderately loud “swoosh”. The sound was fairly similar to the sound a large stick makes when you swing it around rapidly, though the sound of the craft was a bit lower in frequency.
Based on the fact that I observed and heard the craft at the same time, and the fact that the craft disappeared from sight rapidly I got the impression that it was flying low, about 1000 ft.
The craft appeared to be the size of large fighter plane or a small turbo-prop plane, about 20 to 30m in length. It moved relatively fast, similar to a fighter plane doing a low pass at an air show, about 300 to 350 knots.
My immediate reaction wasn’t surprise but rather annoyance. At the time I lived about 40km south-east of Schiphol International Airport near Amsterdam (The Netherlands). One of the main approach routes was directly over my suburb and I was very familiar with seeing commercial aircraft. In fact, on most clear nights I could see their lights from miles away. So my first thought was that it was rather irresponsible to be flying this low without any lights on whatsoever.
The triangular shape also didn’t surprise me at first. I had worked in the armed forces for several years am very familiar with seeing and identifying military aircraft. I fact, not long before the sighting I had a conversation with an ex colleague about US Air Force F117 Nighthawks occasionally flying across the country, pestering the Royal Netherlands Air Force tactical air control centre at Nieuw Milligen.
However, after several moment it dawned on me that even though the craft I had just seen was triangular it couldn’t have been an F117 since the F117 is an isosceles triangle with a V-shape at the back. Most importantly, the turbofans on an F117 are no exactly quiet, while the craft I had just seen almost didn’t make a sound.
To date I have never been able to figure out what I saw that night.
Can sighting be explained as any conventional man-made or natural object?
The sighting was made in a sub-urban area. Buildings in the immediate area mainly comprise 2 to 3 storey town-houses. The area is relatively well lit at night. There is a railroad nearby (several hundred metres) with overhead power lines. There are no major roads or highways nearby. At the time of the sighting there were several operational air force bases within less than 100km distance.
I am a professional geologist with a MSc and over 12 years experience. I also served in the armed forces as a combat engineer (air assault)
Views on UFOs, before and after sighting
As an amateur astronomer I have always been interested in everything in the sky, including the topic of UFO-s about which I have read several books over the years. After the sighting I firmly believe that UFO-s are a real phenomenon though I am inclined to believe that the craft I saw was an experimental airplane. This however, raises quite a few questions on the technology used and motives for developing such a craft. Why someone would fly it over a densely populated area within the approach path of a major airport still baffles me.
