UFO Sighting Report

July, 1982

umbria, Italy

A light moving straight upwards, vertically, then veering off at nearly 90°, without slowing down to maneuver. It had been moving fast but steadily. Having made the turn it accelerated away to a vanishing point, keeping a straight steady course, at enormous speed.

Date Reported:

Sighting Time:

No. of Witnesses:

15-30 secs

Appearance / Description of Object(s)

Too far away to see any detail of shape. It was just a bright, steady, white light.

Size of Object(s)

No way of gauging, except that it had substance- That is, was not brightness due to combustion, but the glow of an object emitting light.

Description of Area / Surroundings

Rural, very sparsely inhabited, perhaps 4 families of contadini within 10sq. km. No electricity poles, nor telephones until 5km nearer town. No military bases or power plants. As unspoiled as countryside can get.

Full Description & Details

I was staying at a farmhouse, with my brother and our girlfriends, deep in the Italian countryside. I had gone outside to pee before bed, when I saw the light described above. I had thought at first that it was strange, definitely not a shooting star, moving straight, in an upwards direction, fast but steady, its radiance undiminished. So I called my brother urgently as I wanted a witness, but he was much too slow to respond. I might have classed it as military, a missile, except for the way it changed direction by about 90° without slowing down or describing an arc. I don't know of any man-made projectile that can maneuver like that. It was not a firework.

Can sighting be explained as any conventional man-made or natural object?

Definitely not a natural object, and I don't think it was man-made for the reason given above.

Witness Background

I am an artist, a painter. The UFO was seen when I was 22, just after leaving Art school. I went on to work in a gallery in St James's, before becoming an Art Teacher.

Views on UFOs, before and after sighting

Before the sighting I had little faith in their reality. I must have seen some grainy images, and had a vague recollection that this sort of maneuver was characteristic of UFOs, but prior to the event I may have felt that witnessing them were as subjective an experience as seeing ghosts.

Other Comments

Unrelated, but as sightings, even rarer: In another part of Italy, near the river Po, I once saw a luminous owl. It was very early, before dawn. This was not a product of my imagination. I was awake, and perfectly sober. The owl was large and luminous, with a similar greenish radiance as the dial of a watch, but much bigger and brighter. It flew silently across the flat landscape, about 30m away from me. I was pleased to come across a series of correspondence on the subject of luminous owls, some six months later, in a collection of letters to the Times.
