Full Description & Details

This happened at midnight on new years eve on a pitch black night, no moon. I was with a friend heading to my house out in the country. The reason I'm certain of the time and date is that the radio was on and the radio host was making all the new years celebration noises with horns and stuff and yelling, happy new year. The year may be off, may have been 71 or 72. We were driving along and suddenly to our right out in a field this disk appeared. We could only see it because of a light that was on it came on. It was hovering out in this field between two tree tops about 60 yards away. As I said it was very dark and we could only see it because of this light. The light was a dark maroon thin band of light that seemed to circle the center of the disk. When the light was on we could see the shape of the disk against the black sky. This light was on for about 10 to 15 seconds and then went out. We were just about speechless after this happened, we were quite shocked at seeing this so close to us. We continued driving to my house which was about another 7 or 8 miles out in the country. When I parked the car in my drive way and we got out of the car the disk was hovering above us. We could'nt see it but we could hear it and by the sound of it, it was very close to us. What it sounded like was like a helicopter without the beats, a constant swirling sound. I was quite interested in it and was straining to see it in the darkness. My friend was quite frightened so I went into the house with her to help her calm down. I forgot to mention that the color of the craft looked like it was dark grey with the maroon band of light around it. I'm not real good with the computer yet or I would send along a drawing, but I can describe the general shape. I would estimate the size to be about 6 to 7 feet tall in the center of the disk and it had a very smooth looking surface that gradually tapered and thinned out to the outer edges. It was about 20 to 25 feet wide.
