Full Description & Details

During the summer of 1998 or 1999 I was living in Thomasbrooke Apartments on 75th Street in Shawnee, Kansas. I was driving home and made a stop at a nearby Quicktrip and upon leaving, spotted a police officer observing the sky with a pair of binoculars. At the time it seemed to me that he was observing the apartment complex immediately to the East of where this Quicktrip was located (It has since moved). After the fact, I realized what he was looking at. When I returned to the parking lot of Thomasbrooke Apartments which was located about 1 block East of the Quicktrip I was alerted to a light in the sky by another apartment resident.

The gentleman was a black male at least in his mid to upper twenties, perhaps older. As I got out of my car, he beckoned my attention to the North. There in the sky was a glowing red ball not much unlike the red beacon at the top of many radio towers. It could have passed for that except there was no tower underneath it, and it was moving ever so slightly. When I first observed it, the light seemed to be floating. There was no indication of movement forward, backward or lateral movement, just a kind of hovering like one would expect from a helicopter.

As I observed the light, it seemed to diminish in intensity giving the appearance that it had moved farther away. It then returned to full intensity and remained for several moments. After a brief period of hovering, it did a dramatic spiral move. From my vantage point, it seemed to make a circular motion. It circled several times at a very fast rate, then immediately stopped and began hovering again. There it remained for several more seconds. After a brief period, it again did a spiral move, but this time also diminished in intensity, as if it was spiraling away at a very fast rate. It may have come back and repeated the maneuver one more time on its last spiral/diminishment, it disappeared.

Other than the Police Officer, and the black apartment resident, there was a small group of children and an adult white female who also observed the strange phenomena. The children asked the parental figure what the light in the sky was, she responded that she didn't know, I blurted it out that it was a UFO at which a point the mother quickly looked at me and denied so as not to stir up the children. After the object was gone from my view, I went into my apartment and told my roommates about the incident. We went back outside but the object never returned.

No one has ever really believed me when I told the story, and I have never been in contact with any other witnesses. I never pursued the matter with the police as I didn't think they'd believe me either. It could have been some sort of strange light phenomena as I never saw an actual object. I would like to know what it was if there are any other witnesses to this type of phenomena.
