I WAS RIDING MY BIKE TO THE STORE WHEN A LARGE BALL OF FIRE WENT NORTH TO SOUTH . I REMEMBER THE SUN WAS SETTING BEHIND ME THE MANS CAR I RAN MY BIKE INTO SAID IT WAS A METEOR. I DONT THINK IT WAS. I THINK MAYBE IT WAS THE SAME THING THAT LANDED IN PA. I WAS 10 YEAR OLD

After a quick scan through similar reports on the Internet, I see that this type of unexpected feature is fairly common in digital photos and is thought to be caused by objects moving across the field of view close to the camera, thereby producing an unfocussed blob on the image.

It would seem unlikely that an insect would produce a blob of this particular shape, although a floating leaf is a possible explanation. The nature of the image seems to suggest a long thin object moving horizontally, fast enough to cause considerably more horizontal than vertical blurring.

The data in the file header indicates that the exposure time was 1/355 sec. If the object was an aircraft, and the apparent horizontal blurring was due to motion, it appears to have moved by approx 20% of its length in the exposure time. For an aircraft of length 100 ft, this implies a speed of about 4800 mph, 9600 mph for 200 ft length, etc. For a nearby object such as an insect, this speed is of course proportionally reduced, but it would seem that the insect would still have to move at an unrealistic rate to produce this image, assuming that the horizontal blurring is due to its speed.

After adjusting for a small error in the setting of the camera's clock, the local time was 10:11:41 (hr:min:sec). The camera type is a Pentax Optio 550, other info also being available in the EXIF data in the picture file.

I was one of many people visiting this popular tourist destination on this day, many armed with digital cameras. I can't help thinking that it would be a useful addition to your research efforts if it were somehow possible to assemble this multitude of images to allow corroboration of a particular sighting.

Another possible explanation for this effect is corruption of the data in the camera's memory. However, having some background in this subject, I find it unlikely that random corruption of the jpeg data would give rise to this form of anomaly.

I would be interested to know, given the vast number of digital images being created around the world on a daily basis, whether this is a recurring feature in digital photography.

It was Between 1-2 am on a week night mid 2004 and my girlfriend an i had been out on a date. We pulled up in the car outside her house in suburban Sydney and were talking about the night we had just had when just above some tree's about 30 metres (the object was probaly 300 metres away) from the car i saw a bright orange coloured orb in the sky. I immediately said to my girlfreind "What the F__K is that!" and we both jumped out of the car walking into the middle of the road watching the object approach. Within 60-90 seconds it was directly over our heads, it was spherical and obvious in the night sky and unlike anything either of us had ever seen a solid yet liquid ball of what looked like fire. It was traveling at low altitude, low enough that if it was an aeroplane we would have been able to hear it and besides it was well past the local aircraft curfew. While staring up at the object a white Ute with 3 very bemused looking men pulled up and the conversation went as follows (men in car) "Can you F__king see that?" Me "YES! What the hell is it" Men in car " We dont know but we have been following it since Fredrick st" (Fredrick st is approx 2-3 kilometres from where my sighting occured and runs off Parramatta Rd and the Western distributer) There was much swearing and confusion as My girlfriend, the 3 men in the ute and i watched the orb slowly fly along the night sky and eventually perhaps 5-10 minutes after we first sighted the object it disapeared on the horizon (my girlfriends house is on top of a hill over looking the surrounding suburbs, about half a kilometre up from canterbury race course, Fourth st Ashbury to be exact). The whole inccident was extremly intense and neither of us were able to sleep that night, although the inccident happened over a year ago its still fresh in my mind i dont think ill ever forget it, and have felt nervous about reporting it up uptil now.

we looked through a telescope and my friend said he saw 3 lights together. 2:28am 2 patches of clouds come out of nowhere and cover the bright light 2:32 am the whole sky is covered with coluds. 2:45 saw it again but there were still some clouds and it now looked like a star. 2:50 am we went outside again and it higher in the sky. 4:19 am right now it went up even higher in the sky but the stars are nowhere close to it. It was moving left to right. it looked like the ufo that i saw in one of the videos that i have.

I saw a saucer like object that was very large slowing spinning/rotating at the height of trees near a farm field at the edge of a busy two lane road. Many cars were stopped on the road watching it. I followed it down the road until it got to a point where the object moved over a farm field. I was freightened and just proceeded on home and didn't stop to speak with any of the others that had stopped. The object had larger orange lites at the top and small lites on the outer edge. For days after the sighting, I scaned local newspapers looking for some news regarding the object and never saw any....but I know what I saw and know others saw it as well. Tonight, I was watching a National Geographic special on UFO's where they mentioned your web site.
