Full Description & Details

I'm an emergency nurse and paramedic in Montreal. I was pregnant with my son at the time, and still smoking(Iquit December 28th 1990) My husband and I lived on the second floor of a huge stone house, with an attic the same size as our appatment, although with a lower ceiling. We we,re in the kitchen, quite disconcerted, listening to the American attack on Bagdad(should give you the date) and fearing another world conflict. I left the house to get cigarettes at the convenient store.I was just driving away north bound on 8th avenue when I saw something from the corner of my eyes. It was dark outside, only lights were street lights. At first I thought it might be the fact that my windshield needed cleaning. But as I was driving, these strings were moving also in relation to my windshiled, so I stopped the car and got out. In the direction of Montreal,i.e.north east of where I was were 7 or 8 strands of various colours, suspended in the air. I could not see any objects that they could have been suspended from nor anything attached to them. their width from my distance were about 3 inches and lenght about 2 feet. They seemed to be lights, although not the type of light I've ever seen before. There was no brilliance, no shimering, and the surrounded area of the sky was not light up by them. I don't know why I think they were lights. Maybe because of the various colours. Yellow, red and orange stick out in my mind but there may have been some blue also(It was a long time ago.) They did not move at all. They just hung there in a localized section of the sky. I don't remember it as a windy night. It was cold but not uncomfortably so. I stayed out of my car for about 5 mins watching them. Then I went to the dépanneur to buy my cigarettes. Again I observed them, and attracted the attention of people coming out of the store to them. I watched them for another 10 mins, hoping to make sense of them. I did not look for neither the moon nor any star as I know they had nothing to do with planets or stars. I think it was overcast, but am not sure anymore. I'm used to see light projectors over Montreal to attract attention to an event, but that was totally different.I've never seen anything like this before nor since. The rotatiing light beam from the Ville Marie building was there as usual but so were these darn things. Since nothing was happening, I went back home and told my husband. We watched them from our kitchen window(north) but to get a better view, we went up to the attic. My husband stated that he thought they were Northern lights. I pointed out to him that I had seen Northern Lights when I was a kid, and it didn't look anything like it. They were just filaments or strings of colour. No wide areas of colour and no waving nor horizontal waves. No movement at all. I would have stayed up to watch them, but seeing that my husband was lukewarm about this I went to bed. They were visible for at least 2 hours in the same spot. The next morning to my regret for not staying up, there was an article in the Journal de Montreal about peolpe seeing a UFO over some building downtown. I don't remember if it was a light or a disc, but they definitely never mentioned strings. I'm sure you can get that article. I must say that I've always believed the UFO phenomenon. In 1968 or 69 (around July)my brother came back from the store all excited about a UFO.(He was a teen ager and I was around 8). It was very hot and we had been alloed to stay up because no one could sleep in such heat.(Maybe around 21.00) The whole family followed him on Champlain BLVD between 2sd and 3rd avenue(we lived on 4th) and watched this disc of light, white, the size of a plate, circling, and sometimes becoming stationnary over our location, but quite high. We watched it for about an hour, along with about ten other people, and then were ordered back to the house by my mom who grew tired of it. Maybe the filaments I saw have a meteorological explanation. I'm only reporting it because I have never heard of anything of the sort and because of the sigthing mentioned in the newspaper the next day.
